“God’s Sovereignty and Grandpas”

“The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will.” Proverbs 21:1

I won’t be here next week. After worship on Sunday I’ll be flying to San Angelo, Texas, to begin a week of “active duty” grand parenting for the Adam and Holly Clark family. But, I won’t be taking any of my old Navy uniforms. First, it’s an Air Force Base, and second, well, let’s be real here - it’s been a few years since they fit!!! Though I might be able to find a hat. Instead, I’ll be in my blue-jean civvies!

Some time in late January, we hope, the household belongings will follow the Adam Clark family to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH – less than an hour away! Adam will be there for the next three years. Wow, how does that happen? There are approximately 100 Air Force bases around the world – last count around 59 in the US. When we were told of Adam’s potential opportunities, Dayton wasn’t even on our radar. We found out later that Adam and Holly had actually requested Wright Patt – that was a little surprising as well. Especially, when you consider that the Air Force has some pretty attractive locations in the states, as well as around the world. But to get Dayton? No way does that happen. But it did – and Grandpa is headed into action!

The question remains, “How did that happen?” Understanding that I am solidly reformed in my view of God’s Sovereignty, the duty station “dream-sheet” that I filled out in the Navy was viewed as anything but a “divine” dream-sheet. Most military personnel will tell you that you get your last choice first. Your life was in the hands of someone who could care less about your dreams – he was your worst nightmare! I still remember that incredulous moment toward the end of my time at the Great Lakes Training Center. I was informed that my colorblindness (which they fully knew about prior to my induction) would now be a problem with my requested field as an Avionics Electronic Technician. It was minor thing – you know – being able to match colored wires on an F-4 Phantom or F-15. How could I mess that up? So, instead of working on things that go up I was shipped off to a location to fix things that go down! But still, how in the world do you get from San Angelo to Dayton? Well, in “the” world – a world that many view from chance and fate – you don’t, not really. But in “God’s” world anything is possible – ANYTHING! You get to Dayton from San Angelo the same way you get to Sardinia, Italy, from San Diego, California. It’s just a little longer trip and a lot more water.

It would take too much time and too much paper to connect the dots on this one today. But trust me; they would all connect. The short answer is the Sovereignty of God – a Proverbs 21:1 God. The same Sovereign God who chose us before the foundation of the world continues to work out His perfect will in our lives – from the cradle to the cross to the crown (Ephesians 1:11). Our Father never loses sight of His children or control of the plan and purpose He ordained before the foundation of the world! The God who sovereignly saves me does not leave the rest up to chance. Yes, we still have choices and decisions to make about life; but we do so with the confidence and assurance that a loving God is deeply interested in our lives – from boyhood to parenthood to grandparenthood, God is working out His plan. That’s true for the Indiana Clarks and the Texas (soon to be Ohio) Clarks. And it’s true for you, too!

So next week, I’ll be driving up from Texas sharing some really silly jokes and stories with my grandkids; including a couple of Chick-fil-A stops along the way. Beloved, it wasn’t good luck that brought Mary Lawson, Everett, and Charleston closer to their grandparents – it was God’s love. And that makes all the difference in the world – His world!

Can you say ROAD TRIP?!!! PB (aka - Grandpa!)

Song of the Month – “We Look To You” – from “Prayers of the Saints” by Sovereign Grace About this album:

“The prayers of the saints in Revelation are the cries of God’s people for his intervention, justice, and deliverance. They reflect the ‘already but not yet’ nature of living between the first and second coming of Christ. Christ has truly triumphed over Satan, death, and sin, but a full and final deliverance awaits his return, when he will destroy every rule and every authority and power (1 Cor.15:24).

The songs on this album include songs of praise and adoration, but we’ve focused on giving expression to the confession, longing, intercession, and anticipation that should characterize the songs of ‘elect exiles’ (1 Pet. 1:1). We have a heavenly home that’s been secured for us through the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus, whose death paid the full penalty for our sins.”

But we’re not home yet.
A great new album to add to – or start – your worship collection!! Here are the link and the lyrics to this

month’s song, “We Look To You”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iia_owSfv-8 “We Look To You”

Deliver us from evil Lord
We sojourn in a broken world Though evil hands give rise to war Remind us this is not our home We look to You we look to You Sovereign King of all the earth We look to You we look to You In Your strength we will endure In Your strength we will endure

Deliver us from evil Lord Our hearts so quickly run astray Temptation crouching at the door To turn us from the narrow way We look to You we look to You

Christ the conquering Son of God We look to You we look to You Lord complete what You’ve begun Lord complete what You’ve begun

Deliver us from evil Lord
The devil’s seeking to devour
With trembling hearts we hear his roar But Your strong arm will crush his pow’r We look to You we look to You Come and end his earthly reign
We look to You we look to You Lord deliver us we pray

We look to You we look to You You will come again to reign We look to You we look to You All the earth will bow in praise

The Apostle Paul, speaking to a wonderfully diverse community of faith in Corinth, writes,

“The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’ On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other (1 Cor. 12:21–25).”

These were not simply believers with different gifts (administration, preaching, etc.) but a mosaic of cultures and nationalities with socioeconomic diversity.

In Christ, God has given us the foundation for making peace between peoples and for our reconciliation with Him and others. In Christ, He has also fully established the fact that, for the common good, for the blessing of the nations and for the ultimate fulfillment of His purposes upon the earth, we genuinely need each other. Thus, we are remarkably and miraculously an interdependent global community. We are, by the work of the Spirit, a community that needs the poor, the rural, the urban, the widow, the orphan, the sojourner, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters; a family comprised of every tribe, tongue and nation. And while we’re at it, let’s be keen to remember that the same Spirit also frees us, in seasons of severe trial and extreme poverty, to “overwhelming joy” and “rich generosity” (2 Cor. 8:1–2). He creates communities of faith that sell their possessions and goods and give “to anyone who has need” (Acts 2:44–45).

Among all our unique differences, flavors, styles, backgrounds, emphases and affiliations, that which genuinely makes us one interdependent community is the precious, powerful gift (the charism) of grace. In humble dependence on the Holy Spirit, embracing the finished work of Christ, we are enabled to fulfill His Great Commission as a global, yet remarkably local, family.
