The Faithfulness in Foolishness

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.  For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. – 1 Corinthians 1:20-25

Tomorrow is April Fools’ Day.  No, really, it is.  And no doubt many of us will be on one end of the day’s folly.  Hmm, I guess that that will make some the fooler, and others the foolee.  At any rate, be very careful what you believe tomorrow!

Foolishness has been around for a long, long time – and it will continue to be that way.  A careful reading of the Book of Proverbs will uncover wise truths regarding the fool and folly – and the disaster that inevitably follows foolishness.  Granted, many of the pranks tomorrow will not fall into that category of folly.  But they will, nonetheless, point out the consequences of succumbing to such suggestions and silliness.   Along with this, I will readily admit that I have played my part in a number of good-natured antics!

Yet, even with all the fun (hopefully) we can’t ignore the reality that foolishness exists in our lives, and not just on April 1st.  Interestingly, the writer Paul places a divinely inspired twist on foolishness to make a point to both the Jew and the Greek – “the foolishness of God is wiser than men.”  In fact, Paul gladly assumed the title “fool for Christ” in his efforts to share the gospel of grace with Jew and Greek alike.  What was that foolishness – foolishness that actually “made foolish the wisdom of the world?”  Christ crucified!  Regrettably, not believing in this truth results not just in foolishness, but fatal foolishness!   But to those who believe, to those who are called, Christ crucified becomes Christ, both the power and wisdom of God – and there’s nothing foolish about that.  By God’s grace foolishness becomes faithfulness!

This was especially true in one man’s life whose passion for Christ and the lost led him to carry that same “foolish” message to the Auca Indians of Ecuador; the man was Jim Elliot.  For years Jim’s team had prepared to reach this dangerous indigenous people.  After just a few days of what appeared to be a growing interest by the Aucas, all teams members were suddenly martyred for Christ; the year was 1956.  But out of that “foolishness for Christ” there is today a friendly tribe in its place, many of whom believed the message “Christ crucified.”  As was said by Paul, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

So in closing, I would like to leave you with a well-known quote that was preserved for us in the journal of Jim Elliot – the date was October 28, 1949.  And though not part of our divinely inspired scripture, it is yet inspired by that same divine scripture from the pen of a fool who chose to believe and live it!

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Happy April Fools’ Faith Day!

Security cameras only captured the scuffling feet of at least five men as they pulled Pastor Raymond Koh from his Honda Accord and pushed him into a nearby SUV. The Feb. 13 abduction took less than a minute in broad daylight near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city.

The abductors used three SUVs to force Raymond to stop his vehicle in the middle of the road. Masked men jumped out of the SUVs, grabbed him and stole his car. As his abductors sped away, video surveillance showed four other vehicles assisting the kidnappers by controlling traffic. Though at least 15 people were involved, police have been unable to locate any suspects.

After more than a month has gone by with no word from the well-regarded pastor, his wife of more than 30 years and his adult children are very concerned. Typically, kidnappers demand a ransom, but despite a large reward offered by the family, they’ve heard nothing. Even so, the family continues to hope in the Lord.

Several hundred people joined Susanna and her children at a candlelight vigil held recently to pray for Raymond’s safe return. A VOM worker who worked with Raymond described him as “one of the most effective evangelists in the region.”

Some believe that Raymond’s outreach efforts to the Malay people may be the reason he was abducted. The pastor founded a community center to help the poor, and over the last twelve years, the center has provided free tuition for students and English lessons for adults. All are welcome, including the majority Malay people, who are required by law to be Muslim. It is illegal for Malays to convert in Malaysia.

More than five years ago, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) accused the pastor of converting Malays to Christianity. The pastor was questioned, but the case was ultimately dismissed for lack of evidence. At the same time, the pastor was receiving anonymous death threats.

Currently, investigators are looking into whether any recent threats have been made.

Susanna has publicly asked for continued prayer for her husband’s safe recovery and that her family will not lose hope.
